Why do we live here?

January 14th, 2009 | Social, Social Welfare | Comment »

I'm in Los Angeles. It's 26 degrees here. Clear blue sky. Faint breeze. In January. I can see some of the pros to living in Canada. No earthquakes. No poisonous creatures. Free health care. Children who aren't obviously stupid and close-minded. And I can see some of the cons to living in LA. The poverty ... Read more »

Hollis and Morris

Interesting design proposal to replace Victorian Apartments on the corner of Hollis Street and Morris Street downtown. Everyone's up in arms because of the red balconies, which are in fact intended to be red tinted glass, but I'm hopeful that's not legitimate grounds for rejecting a development proposal. There's also ... Read more »

Triangle Lands property

This is the old design for the so-called "triangle lands" - the property just after Cogswell at the end of Granville Mall: This was designed by Halifax's WHW Architects, a prominent local firm who, I believe, are best known for their design of Clayton Park's "flagship" Keshen Goodman Library: It turns out ... This photo was used by someone to show the amount of space that the Cogswell Interchange wastes in the Halifax skyline. It's interesting. If it's so underused, I wonder what the justification was for building it in the first place? Giving my Morse's Tea building a more prominent profile? I ... Read more »

Finally – a Metro Transit express bus to Tantallon

March 20th, 2008 | Arts, Design | Comment »

This, from an article in the Herald: A new Tantallon commuter route, which will originate at the Hubley Centre Mall in Upper Tantallon and make only two stops along Highway 103 at exits 4 and 3, will hopefully be launched this fall, says Coun. Gary Meade (Hammonds Plains-St. Margarets). "It’s going to ... Read more »

This would be to the left of the Park Vic on South Park St., just a block from the Spring Garden intersection. It'd be developed by W.M. Fares, using a design by Duffus, Romans, Kundzins, Rounsefell. The lot's small, just a little over a half acre, but it's a great ... Read more »

19 story tower in Halifax

March 10th, 2008 | Arts, Design | Comment »

Apparently some dude named Joseph Metlege is going to build a 19 story tower on the current Trinity Anglican Church property at the corner of Brunswick and Cogswell streets, in front of (behind) the Staples on Gottingen St. Pretty cool. And because it's as-of-right, I guess they're going to try to ... Read more »
