My own horn: tooted.

Two good friends of mine have just launched what I understand is basically a for-profit sustainable development enterprise that connects western businesses with eastern/southern/less-white artisans. It's a mad dope concept. Yeah, I said it. I had the privilege of naming them (Bridge People - get it? It's a double-entendre!), designing ... Read more »

A couple new tower designs that caught my brother's eye: First off, architectural powerhouse Werner Herzog's first high-rise tower: It's a 57-story residential condominium at 56 Leonard Street in New York's Tribeca Historic District in downtown Manhattan. The plans call for 145 residences, each with their own unique floor plan. My opinion: not ... Read more »

Interesting design proposal to replace Victorian Apartments on the corner of Hollis Street and Morris Street downtown. Everyone's up in arms because of the red balconies, which are in fact intended to be red tinted glass, but I'm hopeful that's not legitimate grounds for rejecting a development proposal. There's also ... Read more »

Armour Group's proposal to redevelop a group of low-rise heritage buildings at 1860 Upper Water Street into the Waterside Centre, a 9 story retail and office building that saves historic facades and adds a 6 story glass structure above them, has met resistance from heritage advocates. The Heritage Trust is arguing ... Read more »

Uh-oh. Problems in paradise (“paradise,” for the purposes of this blog post only, refers to Toronto…please don’t read into it, Torontonians).

Apparently. Brandt Anderson, a young dot com millionaire via uSight, wanted to parlay his riches into ownership of an NBA team. He met with David Stern and Snoop Sterny Stern suggested that Brandt cut his ownership teeth in the NBDL. So Brandt bought the Utah Flash. With his fingers already dipped in ... Read more »

Triangle Lands property

This is the old design for the so-called "triangle lands" - the property just after Cogswell at the end of Granville Mall: This was designed by Halifax's WHW Architects, a prominent local firm who, I believe, are best known for their design of Clayton Park's "flagship" Keshen Goodman Library: It turns out ... Crazy designs of Vincent Callebaut

It's pretty wild how much detail he goes into in drawing these. This design is for "Lilypad," a "floating ecopolis for climate refugees."  His website explains that not less than 250 million people will become climate refugees by the end of this century. Yippee. Lilypads are a place to put ... Read more »

New waterfront development on Salter Street

This is an exciting new development planned for the parking lot between Salter Street and Bishop's Landing. I hope this project doesn't get delayed by NIMBYs and such. I can't imagine it would, but, then again, you never know. The designs call for a 12 story, 142 unit apartment building (1) ... Read more »

I wish I still played with Lego. There's this crazy site, www.legoat.com, that gives you visual building instructions for every Lego set ever released. Crazy, right? Nope. This is the crazy part: you can share your own Lego designs - upload the instructions and download those from other users! Pretty damn ... Read more »
