How can you pretend that Public Enemies isn’t amazing? Michael Mann’s a genius. Forrealz.

Sweet God. Public Enemies is such a good movie. It’s amazing. Amazing. In the first 10 minutes alone there were camera decisions that I don’t think I’d ever have the creative vision to select. It’s not just a function of story, nor simply of performance, but of how the story is delivered and how the performances are framed. There are few in the world today who are better at it than Michael Mann. Heat was incredible and certainly merits a re-visit after this experience. Miami Vice was a film that I walked out of in the theatre because the volume was so low (I’m looking at you, Empire Theatres), but that I grew to love on DVD. Collateral was so enjoyable the first time I watched that I immediately reinserted it for a second session. The Insider: classic. Ali: a career changer for Will Smith. The Last of the Mohicans: one of the best movies of all time.
It’s difficult to pretend that Michael Mann is anything but a creative genius. Best of luck if you choose to try.
