Abrams’ Trek

So, clearly this is a JJ Abrams movie. From the sweeping camera shots to the acting to the faux suspense and tightly integrated score, that much is clear. In fact, it feels almost as if Abrams is Trekking into Michael Bay territory. A classier form of Bay, let’s hope. Now, the special effects, upon repeated viewings, look incredible. The story, which seems to focus heavily on the relationship between Spock and Kirk, looks interesting. And a lot more of it takes place on Earth than I had previously believed. But I have a sneaking suspicion that this is going to be another case of Mission Impossible III syndrome – a film where the whole is less than the sum of its parts.Let’s cross our fingers…
