Poor Speed Racer

Maaaan. Its opening weekend was actually only $18.6 million. That’s brutal.

I haven’t seen it, yet, but it’s really getting slammed. Then again, this is what they said about The Matrix:

It’s astonishing that so much money, talent, technical expertise and visual imagination can be put in the service of something so stupid.

and:

The Matrix is mainly also an exercise in outrageous style over substance featuring flowing trenchcoats, sunglasses at night, and LOTS of guns.

And for V for Vendetta:

V for Vendetta is a piece of pulp claptrap; it has no insights whatsoever into totalitarian psychology and always settles for the cheesiest kinds of demagoguery and harangue as its emblems of evil.

and:

V for Vendetta is not a movie of ideas so much as it is an idea mall. By the time you’ve gotten through it, you feel spent, loaded down and more than a little disoriented.

So if they slammed these classics, both movies that I absolutely love, then maybe Speed Racer is exactly what I want it to be…maybe.
