Walk Hard and Pirates of the Caribbean

This actually wasn’t as bad as its box office total suggested. I mean, it was no Superbad, but a lot of the humour just wasn’t laugh-out-loud funny, and not in a bad way. Tim Meadows stole a lot of scenes – it’s nice to see that he’ll be able to sustain an income with roles like this – and the final musical sequence with Jewel, Lyle Lovett, and other guy was probably the highlight of the film. That, and maybe the Beatles scene with Jack Black, Paul Rudd, Jason Schwartzman, and Justin Long, just because their impersonations of the Fab Four were so hilariously over the top.

This is another movie that wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected it to be. It was certainly better than the second one, which I remember being a let down, and not nearly as good as the first one, which I loved mostly because of the music. The acting was top notch, the special effects were simply stunning, but the story, I found, was very difficult to follow. Perhaps that was intentional, I don’t know, and it definitely took something away from the final product, but I don’t think it would have served the movie well to insert more exposition. It was, I think, just a function of the number of characters involved and the number and complexity of each of their corresponding “missions.” Still, an amazing accomplishment.
