Lars and the Real Girl

I’m only 34 minutes in, but this is an amazing movie. And just phenomenal acting by all involved – Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Paul Schneider, Kelli Garner, and Patricia Clarkson. I wonder how much of a role the directing plays in this. I get the feeling that the script was actually less good than the final product. It takes a lot of vision to pull a movie like this off. I really want to see what ends up happening with Gosling’s character. There’s a lot going on there, and you want to understand him. And Mortimer and Schneider have this really cool chemistry on screen. Mortimer, in particular, is somewhat of a scene-stealer. She has this adorable-girl-next-door quality to her. And I love the way Schneider and Gosling play their “brotherhood.” They feel like real brothers. I think we get a skewed sense from films that all brothers are enemies. It’s nice to see a relationship on screen that shows two brothers who are dissimilar, but still love each other.
